Leadership trends : how should we be preparing our leaders for the future?

Abstract

Research on the Top-10 leadership trends in business can usefully inform understanding of the issues facing school leaders. In 2007, researchers at the Centre for Creative Leadership in the US surveyed 247 senior executives around the world to nominate 10 leadership trends in business. The 10 trends identified were: increasingly complex challenges; the need for innovative responses to them; an increasing need for 'virtual leadership' in response to globalisation; an increasing need for collaboration; increasing interruption; the need for authenticity; addressing employment needs as babyboomers retire; addressing leadership succession; addressing leadership for longevity; and shifting from an autocratic to a more participatory leadership. The article looks at each of these trends in turn, drawing lessons from the business experience for schools and school administrators. [Author abstract, ed]
