Playing for the future : sport and recreation, and young refugees

Abstract

Sport and recreation programs have the potential to promote the health, wellbeing and social inclusion of refugee young people in Australia, as long as some significant barriers are removed. The Centre for Multicultural Youth Issues (CMYI) produced a research report in 2007, 'Playing for the Future', as the outcome of a series of consultations and forums to explore the role of sport and recreation in supporting refugee and young migrants to 'settle well' in Australia. While CMYI's exploration of good practice indicates that sport and recreation programs should not be seen as a cure-all, they nevertheless have the potential to promote refugees' and migrants' health and wellbeing. The challenge now is to create an environment that recognises and resources sustainable and inclusive sport and recreation opportunities that harness and build on the strengths of young people.
