Search and find : effective professional development

Abstract

This article describes a new search engine, which has been developed by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) to enable teachers to search hundreds of professional development courses and activities. The VIT began the Pdi project after consulting with teachers and other teacher registration or accreditation bodies on attitudes towards, and barriers to, effective teacher professional development. The results showed the need for good information about the range of professional development activities available. Pdi operates as a centralised online search facility. The site lists courses, services and activities from about 100 universities, professional teaching associations and other providers. There is provision for feedback from teachers through a process for teacher evaluation of courses and activities. The search facility is fully managed, which means provider information and listings are checked for accuracy before going live in the system. Once the dates of activities and courses have passed, they become invisible so that no listings are redundant.
