Spk2usoon? Literacy on planet Internet

Abstract

The author argues that one of the best places to teach literacy is on the Internet. Reliance on the Internet by today's children has both positive and negative influences. The author stresses the fact that the need for communication, in the form of conversation and the power of the written word, has the danger of becoming lost, as they are being replaced by the abbreviated clinical language of text messages and emails. In order to address this, the author describes an attempt by a teacher, Celia Williams, at Salisbury Park Primary School, Adelaide, to use a website called My Story to energise and engage her students in exercising the power of the written word in her classroom.
