Putting the wind and sun to work : sustainable design in schools
Abstract
Adopting a sustainable approach to all areas of school operations makes economic sense. The sustainable approach is based on a clearer understanding of the benefits of efficiency, productivity and occupant health in the overall education equation. There is a large amount of evidence from overseas on the financial, health and environmental benefits of a sustainable school. To make such assertions is all well and good but the first response for many is, 'What is sustainability?' The author's own definition is simple and embraces both financial and environmental components: profit (from reduced costs) + environment = sustainability. He discusses the topic by looking at the costs associated with sustainability, how sustainability is implemented, and how sustainable design puts the wind and sun to work. [Author abstract, ed]
