Here's a bright idea : let students choose

Abstract

The author describes how she had reason to question her approach to teaching following a poor set of presentations by her students on environmental sustainability. She decided to attend a three-day Monash University Science Teaching and Learning (STAL) professional development program, sponsored by Melbourne's Catholic Education Office. Participation in the STAL activities led the author to reflect on some aspects of her approach that may have been holding students back from learning effectively. Back at school she implemented changes to her teaching and learning approach, beginning by questioning everything about her teaching, including the layout of the classroom. making changes to her teaching practice was not easy but the changes have been maintained, leading to a different learning culture within the classroom.
