Easy as 1, 2, 3 : now this is a buddy program

Abstract

Nine professional colleagues from Sacred Heart Primary School, Preston, describe how the 'buddy program' at their school has developed to a new level in 2009. It started when the school introduced the new Health and Physical Education component of the VELS curriculum. Opportunities for their students in sport were limited, as many of the families were new to Australia and joining a sports team was difficult due to language, financial and cultural barriers. The redeveloped buddy program involved the senior buddies collecting their junior buddies with their folders once a week. In the folders is a checklist of skills the students have to teach each week, and this is checked off, with the junior buddy being given a score. Part of the skills program is the senior students teaching their junior buddies how to run, hop, skip and many other skills. [Author abstract, ed]
