Wakakirri : tell me a story
Abstract
The article describes the Wakakirri arts festival, an annual performing arts program for primary schools now in its 17th year. It involves thousands of dancers, singers, actors, writers, artists and film-makers. It is a values-based event inviting schools in Australia to make a positive impact on the world around them. The author explains how the creative and performing arts can be integrated into existing units of study and why they provide alternative ways for students to engage with existing subject matter.
