Abstract
The authors comment on Philip Shanahan's application the PEEL project principles into the teaching of his Year 9 science class at Padua College. Making changes to teaching practice can be difficult and risky. Several factors were at work to assist Shanahan to make the decision to try something new and alter his practice. Firstly he was confident about using the PEEL approach; secondly, he was encouraged by the Science Teaching and Learning professional development program; thirdly, he recognised that these new teaching ideas could offer improved learning opportunities for his students. Thus he was able to move forward by taking risks, implementing new and untried approaches, reflecting on the experience and considering its impact on the students' learning. [Author abstract, ed]
