Another string to your bow
Abstract
The authors comment on Damian Stead's decision to change his approach to the teaching of lower secondary school science. They endorse his approach, arguing that stepping back and letting the students guide the learning through discussion encourages deeper understanding than if the teacher simply imparted the information. While the approach did not suit all students, it is unlikely that any approach will suit all students. Teaching is complex and students have different learning needs. And while Stead has not exactly found the holy grail of teaching and is not likely to only teach in this way in the future, he has added one more tool or strategy to his teaching repertoire and one more way to engage his students in thinking about scientific concepts.
