Abstract
From 1 January 2010, all national system employees are now covered by the National Employment Standards (the Standards) contained in the Commonwealth Fair Work Act 2009. The Fair Work Act establishes 10 minimum standards that cover issues such as the maximum number of weekly hours that an employee can work, requests for flexible working arrangements, parental leave, carer's leave and redundancy pay. The standards replace the five minimum entitlements, as outlined in the Australian Fair Pay and Conditions Standard of the Commonwealth Workplace Relations Act 1996. It's worth understanding those mini- mum entitlements.
