Twitter : viral professional development and networking

Abstract

The capacity of Twitter for micro-blogging makes it an excellent platform for viral professional development and networking. Twitter.com is a social networking service that enables the user to microblog 140 characters at a time and make links across the world wide web so he or she can link to longer posts in his/her blog or other people's blogs, re-post something someone else has posted and make links to useful information. Twitter fills the gap between email and instant messaging, or between synchronous and asynchronous communication. When fellow educators or students are online the user can communicate with them in real time; if not, he or she can read the 'tweets' at a later date and respond. Twitter is an excellent tool for teachers to use in their professional development and networking: it enables groups of professionals to find, share and build upon ideas, practices and strategies.
