Abstract
The literature review on teaching and learning for students in the middle schooling years summarised in this paper was undertaken in 2007. It was commissioned by the New Zealand Ministry of Education following identification of the following issues: limited quality data on middle schooling outcomes in New Zealand; the need to develop an evidence base to inform decisions and policy development in relation to middle schooling; the need to ensure that decisions are informed by the best evidence about effective curriculum and pedagogical approaches in the middle years of schooling; and the need for a coherent, coordinated approach to establishing and generating an evidence base related to middle schooling, including options for wider research on early adolescent education in the middle years.
