Abstract
This report discusses definitions of numeracy within Australian jurisdictions, and describes assessment initiatives in place to assist in identifying 'at risk' students in numeracy. Contents include: assessment purposes and practices; what research shows about Australia's mathematics expectations and achievement; what stateside assessment and international studies indicate about equity issues; how Australia can achieve comparably to Asian countries; what we know about numeracy rather than mathematics and the influence of the National Plan.
