Abstract

This is the final report summarising the evaluation of the South Australian Department for Education’s Early Career Teacher Development (ECTD) Program, conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). This report presents the results and findings of a process and impact evaluation, and the recommendations for program improvement that have emerged. The Early Career Teacher Development (ECTD) program aims to support the induction and professional development of early career teachers (ECTs) by accelerating their progression from provisional to full teacher registration in their first two years. The program has been developed by the South Australian Department for Education, to reflect best practices of teacher induction from around the world, and to align to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, Teaching for Effective Learning framework (TfEL), and curriculum frameworks. The evaluation of the program was conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) during February to May 2019 using information provided by over 370 teachers in government schools and preschools across South Australia. The three-phase evaluation indirectly involved the 2017 target cohort of beginning teachers totalling almost 950 teachers.
