Abstract
In the formative early years of schooling, assessment plays a vital role in helping educators guide each child’s learning. But for young children it can be difficult to capture an accurate picture of what they truly know and can do. Attention spans are short, skills develop at different rates, and unfamiliar formats can get in the way. To be effective, assessments need to be both valid and reliable, but also designed with the developmental needs of early learners in mind.
